All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Is your House Ready for Winter?

"If you don't like the weather in New England, wait 10 minutes."  This old saying has a lot of merit.  A few days ago, I took my car to the car wash because it was a 55+degree day, now we are bundling up or staying indoors as the temperature barely hovers at zero.

This has me thinking about things that can happen to our homes when the bitter arctic air mass is over us.  One such example is an ice dam which occurs when the heat of your home melts snow on your roof and refreezes it at the roof's edge, where it is cooler. The ice will build up and block water from draining off the roof, forcing it under the shingles, into the attic and sometimes down inside the walls of your house.  The damages from an ice dam can be very serious and expensive to fix.

You can decrease the risk that an ice dam will occur or lessen the damage by taking a few steps such as keeping your roof clear of snow, keeping your attic well ventilated and keeping debris out of your gutters and downspouts.

As always, you should review your homeowners policy with your agent or call Georgetown Insurance at 978-352-8000 to see if you have the best coverage for your needs.
