WOW what a winter!!! I cannot wait for the snow to melt and for the warmer temperatures to come!! The good news is we are FINALLY nearing the end of winter, the bad news is the severe weather we experienced this winter in New England generated some serious potholes!! Potholes result when water from melting snow and rain seeps into small cracks in the roadway surface, as temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands, making the cracks larger until potholes form. Heavy traffic, pavement age, vehicle weights, and snow and ice operations all contribute to the problem.
The roads have taken a beating and so are our vehicles. Many are wondering "Is my car covered for pothole damage?" I have some more good news for you, the damage to vehicles caused by a pothole is generally covered under collision coverage - provided that you have purchased collision coverage. Your collision coverage will reimburse you for the costs of repairing your car, minus the deductible. The Insurance Information Institute has more information regarding pothole damage to your car. The MassDOT appreciates the public’s help in telling them about pothole locations on state roads so that repairs can be made as quickly as possible. MassDOT crews throughout the Commonwealth are prepared each day to repair potholes that can damage vehicles and delay traffic. If you see a pothole, please call MassDOT at 857-DOT-INFO (857-368-4636), Toll Free at 877-MA-DOT-GOV (877-623-6846), or visit the online contact information web page to send an e-mail.
