“Do I Really Need Rental Car Insurance?” — What Your Policy Actually Covers

By July 17, 2025July 28th, 2025No Comments

You’re standing at the rental car counter, ready to start your vacation or business trip, when the agent asks, “Do you want to add rental car insurance?”

Cue the confusion.
Do you need it? Is it a scam? Are you already covered?

At Georgetown Insurance Agency, this is one of the most common questions we hear — and the answer depends on a few key factors. Let’s break it down.

What Is Rental Car Insurance Anyway?

When a rental car company offers you insurance, they’re typically offering four types of coverage:

  1. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) – Covers damage to the rental vehicle.

  2. Liability Coverage – Covers injuries or damage you cause to others.

  3. Personal Accident Insurance – Covers your medical bills if you’re hurt.

  4. Personal Effects Coverage – Covers stolen items inside the car.

What Your Personal Auto Policy Might Already Cover

If you have a personal auto policy with comprehensive and collision coverage, it likely extends to a rental car, especially for personal use within the U.S. or Canada.

That means:

  • If you damage the rental car, your existing policy may cover it.

  • Your liability coverage follows you, just like in your own vehicle.

  • Deductibles still apply.

💡 Important: This usually doesn’t apply to international rentals or business travel — always double-check with us!

What About Credit Card Coverage?

Some major credit cards offer secondary rental coverage if you use the card to pay for the rental and decline the rental company’s coverage. This typically covers the deductible and other gaps your personal insurance doesn’t.

Be sure to:

  • Call your credit card company to ask what’s included

  • Get it in writing if possible

Situations Where You Should Consider Buying Rental Coverage

  • You don’t have comprehensive and collision on your personal vehicle

  • You’re traveling for business (commercial use may not be covered)

  • You’re renting outside the U.S. or Canada

  • You don’t want to risk a claim on your personal policy for a temporary rental
